CSA Week #1

I figured since our CSA started yesterday, I'd do a special weekly post every Thursday from now on!

The mass amount of rain had a big effect on many Kentucky farms so our first share wasn't as plentiful as Grasshopper's had hoped for us.  But you know... that's also the risk you take with joining a CSA.  You benefit when the farmers benefit.  But you also go through the sparse times also.  I think it kind of gives you perspective of how the weather really effects the produce we receive.  Me?  I'm not complaining at all, because I definitely appreciate all that our local farms do for us and I'm happy to get anything and support our farmers!

Grasshopper's Distribution does a good job with substituting some canned produce in these times, so we're very lucky either way!

So this was our box this week...

Lots of greenery, obviously!  The contents included:
  • green onions
  • mixed greens
  • head lettuce (which still had the roots attached so I chopped the top off and planted the root part in my garden... all you avid gardeners out there - was that a good idea or am I just a novice idiot? lol)
  • pint of strawberries
  • bunch of swiss chard
  • bottle of Bourbon Barrel Foods Soy Sauce
  • jar of pumpkin butter
  • jar of salsa

All locally made products!

Some beautiful strawberries!

So yeah, that was our haul this week.  You guys have any recipe ideas for me?  I'm in the process of making some strawberry shortcakes with some of those strawberries, so that should be delicious!

If you guys received a CSA this week, what did you end up getting?  I'd love to have a weekly round-up of your CSA goodies (if you participate in one), or even if you made a weekly visit to your Farmer's market - I'd love to see the local produce everyone gets!  So feel free to e-mail a snapshot of your goods (as well as your name and blog title (and don't worry if you don't have a blog, your name will be just fine!) as well as link to your blog) at mtlabor85 (at) yahoo (dot) com and I'll post them in next Thursday's CSA post!

  1. I love to make toast with pumpkin butter. strawberry good to make some smoothie.

  2. I would love to get a CSA- especially one that had pumpkin butter! So jealous!!

  3. Great stash! So many ways to use that soy. I just keeping some good bread with that pumpkin butter....

  4. It looks like you got some great stuff. I think it is pretty cool that you got some canned stuff. I am not sure if we have CSA in my area, but I would like to find out. I have a soup recipe that I think your chard would do well it. The recipes calls for collards but chard would be a lovely substitute.

  5. All the fresh produces are looking great..treat for the eyes.

  6. Nice!!!! How are their taste (if you have tried something already)? Does it taste better?? Can't wait to see your strawberry shortcake! Happy Friday!

  7. I would given anything to be part of such a program. It must feel like Christmas once a week and you have the pleasure of knowing it is fresg and local.

  8. SO JEALOUS!!! I need to find one and join it STAT! <3

  9. I've been looking for a Boston-area CSA that I can get to this summer! If I can't find one I'll just visit your blog every Thursday and live vicariously through your CSA.

  10. I think I told you already but ours starts next week! I'm so excited. I love to see the excitement in my little 3-year old's eyes as he pulls the items out of the box. We've already been warned our loot may be minimal in the beginning but they'll make up for it later in the season.

I love chard just as wilted green. It cooks up so fast in the skillet. Start with a little apple cider vinegar with some onions and garlic, saute that a bit and then add the chard in. After it's wilted down, add in a little chicken stock and let simmer for 10-15 minutes. Delish!

  11. Hi, Peggy! Thank you for your visit to my site and I am so happy to find you! And I am looking forward to getting to know you better. Culinary school after your biology degree? How wonderful to pursue something you really love!! :)

  12. Peggy, We don't start our CSA here in Danville until next week, but I'll send along my post when I start up! I can't wait...your box is making me jealous! :-)
